As the period for applications to serve as a judge draws to a close, I thought I would share this sonnet (which may or may not be written by noted facial hair aficionado W. Shakespeare) that addresses, I think, the beauty and challenge of judging a beard competition:
Sonnet for a Beard Judge
When as a boy I climbed my grandpa’s knee
and felt the tickle of long whiskers near
he touched my face then bare and quite hair free
and spoke these words, once merely heard, now clear:
“I know you love my moustache grey and long;
you lose yourself in forests on my chin.
‘Tis true, a man’s free spirit stays most strong
when on his face he shows more than just skin.
So honor all who choose to wear the beard,
regardless of how grandly done or plain:
their passions, like their faces, stand unsheared;
they stay unshaved to be unique, not vain.
But though each beard to each a brother be,
a few,” he laughed, “are much cooler indeed.”
Methinks, logo depicting Themis (Greek goddess of justice) is not within the spirit of this event. I trust that all women (including goddess) will take their blindfolds off and judge us fairly and equally. See you around (the) Bend!!!!
