Handlebar Club rep: “Beards are hideous.”
Michael “Atters” Attree, who emceed the World Beard and Moustache Championships held in England in 2007, has declared beards hideous, according to CNN. See, http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/05/10/norway.beard.moustache.championship/
Atters is a member of London’s anti-beard Handlebar Club, host of the WBMC 2007.
Similar to other anti-beard organizations such as the New York Yankees, the United States Army, and Disneyland, the Handlebar Club specifically prohibits its members from having beards, as do other organizations involved in this weekend’s WBMC in Trondheim, Norway.
Among other things, Beard Team USA is committed to ending anti-beard discrimination worldwide.

Bearing in mind that “Atters” is a British satirist, comedy writer and comedian I shouldn’t get too bent out of shape or construe his comments as anti-beard. Nor would I be quick to label the Handlebar Club as anti-beard. In fact the club offers a membership category for its bearded friends.
That said, clubs that admit both beards and ‘taches exist worldwide. IMHO, there’s something special about a club established in 1947 that has remained exclusive to the tradition of handlebars only. No offence intended to our bearded brother, but long may it remain so.
Atters is a massive hero of mine. when you read the CNN report you see his opinions (in context) are his alone and heavy on the tongue-in-cheek factor. I agree with “Schnauzer” on this matter completely. Atters in matter of fact often writes in a positive (though comedic) light about the full beard in his column for the British magazine the Chap, always stating his own preference for the mustache.
When you discriminate against facial hair for one you discriminate against facial hair for all.
I see he’s responded with a rite snipe at BTUSA the latest (fall edition) of Chap!

In response, looks like Atters’s just taken a big snipe at BTUSA in his latest (fall issue) of Chap magazine!
